Dominant India Put Four Past Malaysia to Lead Asia Cup Standings

India delivered a statement performance in Rajgir, Bihar, defeating Malaysia 4-1 to climb to the top of the Super 4s table at the 2025 Men’s Hockey Asia Cup.

The match started in dramatic fashion when Malaysia stunned the home crowd inside the first minute. Shafiq Hassan took advantage of India’s defensive lapse and smashed in a reverse strike to make it 1-0. For much of the opening quarter, India looked unsettled, with their attacking moves breaking down under pressure.

The turnaround came early in the second quarter. A series of penalty corners eventually paid off when Manpreet Singh slotted home the equaliser. Moments later, Sukhjeet Singh put India ahead, capitalising on sharp link-up play from Shilanand Lakra. Just before halftime, Dilpreet Singh’s enterprising run ended with Shilanand’s clever deflection, extending the lead to 3-1.

India tightened their grip in the third quarter as Manpreet turned provider, setting up Vivek Sagar Prasad for a composed finish. With a healthy cushion, coach Craig Fulton’s side shifted to a more conservative approach, allowing Malaysia greater possession but keeping their defensive shape intact.

The result not only avenged India’s sluggish start but also reinforced their credentials as serious contenders for the continental crown.
