India’s Asia Cup 2025 Squad: Selectors Back Young T20 Stars, Gill Likely to Miss Out

The Indian selectors will meet today at the BCCI office to finalize the squad for the Asia Cup 2025, set to be played in the UAE from September 9-28. The focus is on backing India’s young T20 specialists and continuing with a fearless batting approach.

Captain Suryakumar Yadav has cleared his fitness test and will lead the side, likely until the 2026 T20 World Cup. The top order is expected to include Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma as openers, Tilak Varma at No.3, and SKY at No.4. Samson and Tilak have both scored multiple T20I centuries recently, while Abhishek impressed with a 135-run knock against England.

Despite an excellent IPL 2025 season, Shubman Gill is unlikely to make the squad as the management prefers aggressive batters for T20s. Yashasvi Jaiswal, another contender, has been asked to focus on red-ball cricket ahead of the home Test series against West Indies and South Africa. Shreyas Iyer, in good form, also faces tough competition from Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh.

In bowling, Jasprit Bumrah has confirmed availability after a minor injury, while Mohammed Siraj will likely be rested. Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, and Hardik Pandya are expected among seamers, with Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Washington Sundar, and Axar Patel in spin. Jitesh Sharma may be included as the second wicketkeeper.
