KANE AND COMPANY RUN RIOT: RUTHLESS BAYERN DISMANTLE ATALANTA IN ONE-SIDED ALLIANZ ARENA MASTERCLASS

MUNICH — Bayern Munich sent out the most emphatic of statements at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday evening, crushing Atalanta 4–1 in a Champions League quarter-final first leg that was as dominant as it was devastating. Harry Kane was irresistible. Luis Diaz was electric. And Atalanta — for all their admirable fight — were simply overwhelmed by a German machine operating at the peak of its considerable powers.
For the first half-hour, Atalanta made a decent fist of it. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side pressed with purpose, and the Italian outfit’s characteristic aggression made life uncomfortable for Bayern’s backline. But the Bavarians’ quality was undeniable, and on the 25th minute, the opener arrived — slick, precise, inevitable. Bayern had their foothold, and they never let go.
The second half was a different story entirely. Three goals in sixteen second-half minutes — the 54th, 56th, and 70th — turned a close contest into a procession. Kane’s movement was impeccable throughout, dragging centre-backs out of position and creating space for Diaz and Serge Gnabry to exploit in behind. With 66% possession and 23 shots across the ninety minutes, Bayern’s dominance was total.
Atalanta grabbed a consolation in the 85th minute through a well-taken finish that at least gave their travelling fans something to cheer, but by then the tie was already buried. Gianluca Scamacca, introduced from the bench, tried to provide a focal point but found Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano — immovable in central defence — utterly impenetrable.
Bayern march on. The second leg in Bergamo is a formality unless Atalanta can summon something extraordinary. Based on Wednesday night’s evidence, Bayern are one of the genuine contenders to lift the trophy in May.
