Besiktas have parted ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after their shock elimination from the UEFA Conference League playoffs at the hands of Swiss side Lausanne. The Turkish giants were beaten 1-0 at home on Thursday night, with ex-Arsenal forward Nathan Butler-Oyedeji scoring just before halftime. Besiktas’ hopes of a comeback collapsed early in the second half when Felix Uduokhai was sent off, sealing a 2-1 aggregate defeat.
The club’s board held an emergency meeting after the match and announced Solskjaer’s dismissal, thanking the Norwegian for his services and wishing him success in the future.
The 52-year-old, best known for his stint as Manchester United manager, had taken charge of Besiktas in January following a three-year break from coaching. He guided the Istanbul side to a fourth-placed finish in the Super Lig last season but struggled in Europe. Prior to the Lausanne defeat, Besiktas had already suffered disappointment in July when they were knocked out of the Europa League qualifiers by Shakhtar Donetsk.
Solskjaer, who previously managed Molde in his native Norway, spent nearly three years at Old Trafford, achieving a second-place Premier League finish in 2021 before being sacked later that year. His future in management remains uncertain.
